What is an Enrolled Agent?

An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a federally licensed tax professional authorized to represent taxpayers in all matters before the Internal Revenue Service.

Enrolled Agents hold the highest credential awarded by the IRS for tax practice and have unlimited rights to represent individuals and businesses in audits, collections, appeals, and other federal tax matters.

An Enrolled Agent is authorized to:

  • Represent taxpayers in audits, collections, and appeals

  • Communicate directly with the IRS on a client’s behalf

  • Prepare and sign federal tax returns

  • Provide year-round tax strategy and compliance guidance

Unlike many tax preparers, Enrolled Agents have unlimited representation rights before the IRS.

Both Enrolled Agents and Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) are qualified tax professionals:

Key distinctions:

  • CPAs are licensed by individual states and often practice broadly in accounting, auditing, and financial reporting.

  • Enrolled Agents are federally licensed and specialize exclusively in taxation and IRS representation.

For individuals and business owners seeking focused federal tax expertise and representation authority, an Enrolled Agent offers specialized knowledge in tax law and compliance.
